BREAKING: FG sacks Nnamdi Azikiwe University VC, Bernard Odoh

The Federal Ministry of Education has announced the removal of Dr. Bernard Odoh as the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and the dissolution of the institution’s Governing Council.

The announcement, made on Wednesday through a statement by the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Folashade Boriowo, follows accusations from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that the Governing Council failed to adhere to due process in Odoh’s appointment. ASUU had called for the dissolution of the Council, citing illegalities in the process.

According to the Ministry, the decision to dissolve the Governing Council came after an investigation revealed that the Council’s Chairman unilaterally appointed a Vice-Chancellor who did not meet the minimum eligibility criteria for the role. This action led to unrest within the university community and undermined order and harmony on campus.

Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Honourable Minister of Education, stressed the need for immediate action to prevent further destabilization of the institution, as the unlawful actions of the Governing Council posed a significant threat to the university’s stability.

As part of the changes, Prof. Bernard Odoh has been removed from his position as Vice-Chancellor, and an Acting Vice-Chancellor will be appointed. The Ministry also assured that a new Governing Council would be constituted soon to restore proper governance and ensure compliance with legal frameworks governing the university.
