Fuel subsidy: Let the poor breathe protest rocks Abuja

Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have taken to the streets to protest against the hardships resulting from the removal of the fuel subsidy.

On Wednesday, reports indicated that NLC President, Joe Ajaero, accompanied by other officials, gathered at the Unity Fountain in Abuja for a peaceful demonstration.

Various other groups joined the protest, including the National President of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Muhammed Ibrahim, representatives of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the National Union of Road Transport Workers, and more.

The protest was sparked by the recent surge in fuel prices and the unsuccessful meeting between NLC representatives and the federal government.

Responding to the union’s strike action, the federal government, through the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Beatrice Jedy-Agba, asserted that the strike would only hinder, restrict, or delay work performance.

Jedy-Agba emphasized that the union had been legally prohibited from engaging in industrial action, making their current move illegal.
