Gunmen on Thursday night ambushed a Benue Links bus in Ikobi, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, killing the driver and abducting all passengers on board.

The assailants attacked the vehicle along the highway, shooting the driver dead before taking the passengers into the surrounding bush. However, a toddler was reportedly left behind at the scene.

Sources said that the gunmen launched their attack suddenly, catching the passengers and driver off guard.

Despite the violence of the ambush, security agencies have been alerted and are actively working to track down the victims’ whereabouts, though no official statement has been released by the authorities yet.

Mike Magaji, president of the Ochetoha K’Idoma youth wing, expressed outrage over the attack and condemned the state government’s apparent inaction in the face of rising violence.

“It is devastating that our people continue to live in fear, while the government chooses silence over action,” Magaji said. “How many more innocent lives will be lost before something is done?”

Magaji also voiced his disappointment over the governor’s visit to Otukpo on Thursday, criticizing it as ineffective and lacking any concrete plans for addressing the insecurity in the region.

“Our people were expecting leadership, not empty reassurances,” he said. “We need real solutions and a firm plan to end these attacks. The government must take responsibility. We can no longer mourn our loved ones while those in power turn a blind eye.”
