Armed attackers on Wednesday launched an assault on the convoy of former Anambra State Governor, Dr. Chris Ngige, along the Nkpor–Nnobi axis in Idemili North LGA, resulting in the death of a woman and multiple injuries.

According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen who disguised themselves in military and police attire opened fire on the lead vehicle.

A police officer in the pilot car was shot dead, with the attackers reportedly seizing his service rifle and uniform before fleeing.

The woman fatally shot at the scene was said to have been using her phone to record the unfolding attack.

A nearby shop owner, who stepped outside to see what was happening, was struck by bullets and suffered serious wounds.

He reportedly lost a large amount of blood and is awaiting surgery to extract bullet fragments but is currently stable. The head of the escort team also sustained gunshot injuries and has undergone a successful operation.

The pilot vehicle was severely damaged by bullets during the exchange.

Dr. Ngige was not travelling with the convoy at the time of the incident. His former press secretary, Mr. Fred Chukwuelobe, confirmed the development, stating: “I spoke with His Excellency, Dr. Ngige, who confirmed the attack and assured that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure adequate medical care for the injured.

He also extended condolences to the family of the woman who was killed while recording the attack.”

As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command has not released an official statement regarding the ambush.
