Namibian President Hage Geingob is dead.

Geingob passed away on Sunday while undergoing medical treatment, as announced by his office.

The official statement, posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by the Namibian presidency, conveyed that despite the best efforts of Geingob’s medical team at Lady Pohamba Hospital, the president succumbed to his illness in the presence of his wife, Monica Geingos, and children.

President Geingob, aged 82, had been receiving treatment for cancer, a fact revealed by his office last month. The medical procedures included a colonoscopy and a gastroscopy on January 8, followed by a biopsy.

Namibia’s acting president, Angolo Mbumba, urged for calm in the aftermath of this sad news. In the same post, he announced that the Cabinet would promptly convene to address the necessary state arrangements.

President Hage Geingob, who had held office since 2015, was on the verge of completing his second and final term this year. In 2014, he had publicly declared his successful battle against prostate cancer. Namibia now grapples with the loss of a leader who had played a significant role in shaping the nation’s recent history.
