Hisbah Commander, Sheikh Daurawa resigns, blasts Gov Yusuf

Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa has resigned as the Commander-General of Kano’s Hisbah Board, citing “discouragement” from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. Daurawa expressed his disappointment with the governor’s remarks despite his dedicated efforts to uphold societal morality during his tenure at Hisbah.

In a video shared on his social media platform, Daurawa revealed, “I am currently in Kaduna State, engaged in discussions with lawmakers led by the Speaker regarding the implementation of mandatory pre-marital health checks in Kano, similar to those in other Nigerian states. However, I have faced discouraging comments from Kano, despite my sincere efforts at Hisbah to promote societal morality.”

He continued, “I have actively collaborated with Kannywood and TikTok celebrities, providing guidance and even financial assistance to some TikTokers. I also offered advice to Murja. Unfortunately, those who disregarded our guidance faced consequences. I apologize to Governor Yusuf for my frustration and hereby tender my resignation from the position he entrusted me with at Hisbah. I wish him the best in his leadership.”

Governor Yusuf had expressed dissatisfaction with the implementation of Hisbah’s ‘Operation Kau da Badala’ across the state. This initiative aims to combat immorality and enforce sanity in line with Islamic values. During a meeting with Imams at Kano Government House, the governor criticized the modus operandi of the board, stressing the need for a review.

He remarked, “I witnessed a video that deeply disturbed me. Individuals were apprehended and subjected to physical punishment for engaging in inappropriate behavior. Such actions are unacceptable; Hisbah should operate with dignity and adherence to the law. We must ensure that our youth are guided toward righteousness without resorting to undue force or humiliation.”

Governor Yusuf emphasized the importance of upholding Islamic values with wisdom and compassion, urging agencies like Hisbah to fulfill their mandate responsibly. He expressed concern that heavy-handed tactics could alienate the youth and undermine the board’s intended purpose.
