BREAKING: I want to send Nigerian troops to Benin Republic – Tinubu writes Senate

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally written to the Nigerian Senate seeking approval for the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin.

The request follows the ongoing attempted coup in the neighbouring West African nation, where a military faction reportedly attacked President Patrice Talon’s residence in the Le Guézo area of Cotonou early Sunday.

According to the letter transmitted to the Senate, the troops will be deployed on a peacekeeping mission aimed at stabilising the situation and supporting constitutional order in Benin.

This comes on the heels of a coordinated operation by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in collaboration with Beninese authorities, as both countries moved swiftly to contain the coup attempt and prevent further escalation.

Further updates are expected as the Senate deliberates on the President’s request.
