Some agitated youths expressed their anger towards Nigerian artiste Davido by setting fire to one of his banners. The protest was triggered by Davido’s failure to issue an apology for a controversial video he had shared on Twitter.
The video, which circulated on Tuesday, showed the group igniting Davido’s banner while a commentator vehemently cursed the singer for allegedly ridiculing Islam. The individual expressed strong disapproval and cursed Davido in Hausa, saying, “Davido, may God curse your blessings. Davido, we hold prayer in the highest regard. The way you mocked prayer, may Allah also mock you.”
In response to the growing uproar, Twitter user $ULTAN (@Sarki_sultan) called for Davido to apologize, suggesting that it would be a significant step in resolving the situation. The tweet read, “Davido should apologize [let’s] end this. It takes nothing to say ‘I am sorry.'”
Davido’s tweet had triggered widespread reactions online, with prominent figures like former media aide to Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, and Kannywood actor, Ali Nuhu, criticizing the Afrobeats singer for disrespecting Islam. Bashir Ahmad emphasized that Muslims do not take their religion lightly and expressed the sacredness of Salah (prayer) in Islam.
Under mounting pressure, Davido eventually deleted the controversial video titled “Jaye Lo,” which featured his signee, Logos Olori, and received praise from Bashir Ahmad, Ali Nuhu, and others.
However, the deletion of the video did not quell the anger of some Muslim faithful, who have called for a complete ban on Davido’s music in all 19 northern states of the country.
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) also weighed in, urging the State Security Service (SSS) to invite Davido for questioning regarding the video. MURIC described the video as “capable of igniting anarchy in Nigeria” and emphasized the need for accountability.
