The Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has ruled in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC), overturning the victory of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the March 18 election. Yusuf, who ran under the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), had initially been declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Nasir Gawuna, his APC rival, extended his congratulations to Yusuf but the APC proceeded to challenge the results in court. Subsequently, the three-member tribunal ordered the withdrawal of Yusuf’s certificate of return, directing that a certificate of return be issued to Gawuna instead.
The tribunal also invalidated 165,663 votes from Yusuf’s total count, categorizing them as invalid due to the lack of stamping or signing on the respective ballot papers.
