Several passengers sustained injuries and rushed to safety after the LagFerry vessel, Igbega Eko, exploded and caught fire while en route to Victoria Island.

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) confirmed the incident on Thursday morning, stating that their personnel were on-site to prevent further escalation.

Witnesses reported a loud explosion followed by flames quickly engulfing the boat. The exact cause of the fire remains unclear, and investigations are underway, a NIWA representative told Tribune Online.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) also verified the fire incident, noting that the cause is still under investigation. In a statement issued by LASWA’s Public Affairs Unit, the agency confirmed the incident occurred at around 6:45 AM at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu.

“Upon receiving the distress call, LASWA’s emergency response team swiftly mobilized to the scene, collaborating with LAGFERRY, boat operators, and first responders to manage the situation effectively. Thankfully, all passengers and crew were evacuated safely. Four passengers sustained minor injuries and are receiving medical treatment,” the LASWA statement read.

LASWA assured the public that investigations are ongoing, and a thorough assessment is being carried out in collaboration with LAGFERRY and other stakeholders. They emphasized that safety remains a top priority and any necessary measures will be implemented to improve fire prevention on Lagos waterways.

The statement also reassured the public that all safety protocols are intact, and ferry operations will continue as scheduled. LASWA urged passengers to follow safety guidelines while traveling on the waterways and promised to provide updates as investigations progress.
