The police have apprehended two suspects, including a local government chairman, in connection with an alleged conspiracy to assassinate the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Aondona Hycenth Dajoh.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by Force spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi.
The statement revealed that investigations uncovered the local government chairman’s purported involvement in contracting a militia to carry out the sinister plot against Speaker Dajoh.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the Local Government Chairman allegedly contracted a militia with the sinister intention of eliminating the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Hon. Aondona Hycenth Dajoh,” the statement read.
The Force Intelligence Department’s Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) promptly took action upon receiving credible intelligence about the planned assassination.
Both suspects are currently in police custody and are actively cooperating with investigators during the ongoing inquiry.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in its commitment to upholding the safety and security of citizens and public officials,” assured Adejobi.
He further emphasized that both suspects would face the full weight of the law as the investigation unfolds. The arrest underscores the authorities’ dedication to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of public figures in the state.
