Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Acting Governor of Ondo State, has arrived at the Governor’s office to participate in the swearing-in ceremony as the new state governor.
Following the unfortunate passing of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu earlier on Wednesday, Aiyedatiwa is set to take the oath of office as the Governor of Ondo State. The journey to Aiyedatiwa assuming the role of governor has been a year-long one, marked by Akeredolu’s health challenges and, ultimately, his demise on Wednesday while receiving treatment for prostate cancer in Germany.
Aiyedatiwa faced and survived an impeachment attempt orchestrated by Akeredolu’s allies in the Ondo State House of Assembly, as well as significant opposition from the late governor’s supporters.
In recent months, political controversy surrounded the state, prompting activists and constitutional lawyers to call for Akeredolu to transfer power to Aiyedatiwa in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.
Akeredolu, who served as a second-term governor before his passing, had been in and out of foreign hospitals. On December 13, 2023, he officially transmitted power to Aiyedatiwa before embarking on another medical trip overseas, his second in the same year. Unfortunately, Akeredolu, aged 67, couldn’t return to Nigeria and succumbed to complications arising from prostate cancer.
