BREAKING: Many feared dead as bomb blast rocks Maiduguri Mosque on Christmas eve

Suspected Boko Haram fighters on Wednesday evening reportedly set off an improvised explosive device (IED) at a Juma’at Mosque in Gamboru Ward, near the Customs area in central Maiduguri, Borno State.

The explosion was said to have occurred around 6:10 p.m. as Muslim faithful were performing the Maghrib prayer.

Details surrounding the incident are still unclear, but eyewitnesses who spoke to Channels Television by phone said several worshippers were feared dead, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

When contacted, the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, said he could not immediately verify the explosion, noting that he was heading to the location to ascertain what happened.

The incident has reportedly heightened tension in the area, particularly among residents, with members of the Christian community expressing fear ahead of the 2025 Christmas celebrations.

Meanwhile, security personnel have sealed off the vicinity to forestall further harm and to enable an initial investigation into theincident.
