BREAKING: NAFDAC proposes death penalty for fake drug dealers

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has proposed the death penalty for drug peddlers.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Friday, NAFDAC Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the need for harsh penalties to deter drug peddlers, particularly those whose actions result in the deaths of children.

She recounted an alarming case where children’s medicine was sold for N3,000 instead of the usual N13,000 in a mall. When the medicine was tested in NAFDAC’s Kaduna lab, it was found to be entirely ineffective.

“People don’t need to put a gun to a child’s head to kill them—bad medicine can do that,” Adeyeye stated.

She called for the cooperation of the judiciary and National Assembly to make such penalties a reality, arguing that the current penalties for drug-related offenses, such as five years in prison or a fine of N250,000 for selling harmful drugs like Tramadol, are insufficient to curb the problem.

“If the laws aren’t strong enough and the judiciary isn’t firm, we will continue to face this issue,” she warned. Adeyeye added that NAFDAC is working with lawmakers to push for stiffer penalties.
