The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has been urgently hospitalized at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri, where he is currently under medical care The Nation newspaper reports.
The NLC’s Head of Information and Publicity, Comrade Benson Upah, has revealed that Ajaero’s right eye is entirely swollen shut.
According to The Nation report, Ajaero was forcibly taken away by heavily armed operatives during the Union’s protest in Imo state on Wednesday.
The latest update from Upah reads: “We established contact with Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero this evening around 15:30 hours at the Police Hospital in Owerri, from where he was transferred to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he is receiving medical attention.
“He was severely battered, and at the time of contact, his right eye was completely swollen shut. Ajaero was subjected to physical assault while blindfolded and taken to an undisclosed location where he endured further brutality, sometimes involving the use of bottles. His phones, money, and personal belongings were confiscated and have not been returned to him.”
