The Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the state House of Assembly to initiate the impeachment process against Governor Rotimi Akeredolu due to his prolonged absence from the state. The opposition party alleges that the governor’s extended absence, exceeding six months, constitutes an impeachable offense, and the Assembly should take action accordingly.
The PDP asserts that Ondo State has been operating without effective leadership for nearly half a year due to the governor’s ill health. The PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kennedy Peretei, stated in a released statement that, “The time has come for the Ondo State House of Assembly to immediately begin the impeachment process of Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, for violation of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.”
Peretei raised concerns about the governor’s lack of regular meetings with the deputy governor and other government officials, as required by the Constitution, given Akeredolu’s medical condition. He suggested that the Assembly should invoke constitutional provisions to establish a medical panel to assess the governor’s health status.
In response, the Majority Leader of the State Assembly, Mr. Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, defended Governor Akeredolu’s performance and compliance with constitutional duties. He refuted the PDP’s claims and highlighted the ongoing development projects, salary payments, and other governmental functions that have continued under the governor’s leadership. Ogunmolasuyi criticized the PDP as a “dead party.”
Governor Akeredolu, who had been on medical vacation in Germany, returned to the country and has been in his personal residence in Ibadan, Oyo State. His Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Richard Olatunde, stated that the governor is set to return to Ondo State soon.
