Two Nigerian Air Force (NAF) pilots escaped unhurt on Saturday after an Alpha Jet on a test mission crashed at the Kainji Air Base in Niger State.

Following the incident, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, ordered the setup of an immediate Board of Inquiry to determine the cause of the crash.

In a statement released by NAF spokesperson, Air Cdre Ehimen Ejodame, the Air Force hailed the “exceptional bravery and professionalism” displayed by the pilots, who successfully ejected when the aircraft encountered an in-flight emergency during a post-inspection functional check.

According to the statement, the jet ran into trouble shortly after take-off, forcing the crew to respond quickly and decisively.

“They expertly manoeuvred the aircraft away from populated areas before executing a safe ejection,” he said.

Ejodame confirmed that the pilots are undergoing standard medical checks. He added that the CAS, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, praised their “courage, discipline and sound judgement,” noting that their actions prevented casualties on the ground.

He further disclosed that a Board of Inquiry has been commissioned to probe the crash.

Reassuring Nigerians, the Air Force emphasised its commitment to maintaining strict safety procedures and ensuring operational readiness.

“The NAF remains dedicated to safeguarding its personnel while protecting the lives and property of citizens in line with its constitutional mandate,” thespokesman stated.
