It was recorded in the meeting that, to change leadership of the Senate, a total of 74 Senators which is 2/3 will be needed and with APC sure of only about 51 to 53 Senators and a good number of the APC Senators out of the country, it will be impossible to get the required number.
Oshiomhole was reportedly mandated to contact President Muhammad Buhari to inform him that they don’t have the numbers but with his direct go ahead, they could go ahead to force the plan through.
Members at the meeting were said to have broken off for one hour but could not get through the President in UK.
They however, agreed to try Mr president again this morning but couldn’t fully agree on who should be the Senate President between Senators Ahmed Lawan and George Akume.
There were strong arguments against picking Lawan since he and Speaker of House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara are from the same political zone, while other Senators mostly from the North West strongly opposed having Senator Hope Uzodinma whom one of the Senators referred to as “corruption personified”, as the deputy Senate President.
