The Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a strong condemnation of the recent armed bank robbery in Otukpo, Benue State, which resulted in the tragic loss of lives. The attack, which claimed the lives of both police officers and innocent civilians, has been deemed an assault on the principles of peace, security, and justice that the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies are dedicated to upholding.
In a heartfelt message, the IGP conveyed his condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims affected by this senseless act of violence. He confirmed that two of the suspects were gunned down by operatives while attempting to escape. The IGP emphasized that the assailants behind this brazen act of criminality have indeed “murdered sleep” in the Otukpo community. He pledged that every resource and effort will be dedicated to swiftly apprehending and bringing these individuals to justice.
The Nigeria Police Force has initiated a comprehensive and coordinated response to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice. The IGP has ordered the deployment of additional operational and investigative assets and resources to Otukpo, the Benue State Command, and surrounding states to assist in swiftly apprehending the other fleeing criminals responsible for the atrocity. This comes as a follow-up to the earlier engagement, which resulted in the killing of two of the armed robbers after a hot chase on Friday.
In light of this incident, all police commands and formations have been placed on red alert to prevent further deadly attacks on institutions and innocent citizens, especially since the Otukpo attack served as an early warning sign of potential challenges during the Ember Months, characterized by an upsurge in bank robberies and related crimes.
The public has been urged to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities by providing any information that may aid in the investigation and pursuit of the suspects. Such assistance is considered invaluable in the mission to restore safety and security in the affected area and across Nigeria.
The IGP has reiterated the NPF’s commitment to the safety and security of the Nigerian people. The police force stands united against acts of violence and criminality, vowing to work tirelessly to ensure that those responsible for this reprehensible act are brought to justice.
