BREAKING: Police disperse protesters with teargas in Benue over Yelewata killings
Security operatives on Sunday fired teargas to disperse a group of angry youths protesting the killing of over 200 residents in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
The demonstrators, dressed in black and holding placards, took to the streets to demand justice and immediate intervention from both the state and federal governments. Their chants echoed calls for an end to the ongoing attacks by suspected armed herdsmen.
The protest, which began peacefully, took a violent turn when police arrived and began firing teargas into the crowd in an attempt to break up the demonstration.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of fear and chaos as people ran in different directions for safety. Several protesters were reportedly injured during the stampede that followed the teargas assault.
