A group of women who converged at the Yenagoa, Bayelsa command headquarters, demanding the resignation of State Commissioner of Police, Tolani Alausa, were dispersed by command operatives.
The female protestors, donned in black, urged on Friday for Alausa’s removal before the off-cycle governorship election on Saturday to ensure a peaceful electoral process. They specifically called for President Bola Tinubu and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun to facilitate Alausa’s removal.
However, their refusal to leave unless their demands were met led to the command’s use of tear gas to disperse the protestors.
Following this incident, another group arrived at the command center, expressing support for the CP.
The initial protest began on Thursday at the police command headquarters and carried on into Friday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Ofem Arikpo defended the CP, stating that Alausa had not violated any laws and therefore could not be removed at this critical juncture, especially with the elections impending.
Alausa assumed the role of the 36th commissioner of police in the state on November 7.
This call for the CP’s removal coincides with the opposition parties in Imo state persisting in their demand for the removal of the Imo state Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Sylva Agu.
