The Benue State Police Command has take over the state secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Makurdi, the capital city.
They intervened to halt a scheduled political meeting organized by the Mr. Austin Agada-led Executives, which was slated for Friday, March 1 and 3, 2024.
This meeting, reportedly convened by the APC Executives alongside selected stakeholders and the newly appointed Federal Housing Authority (FHA) Executive Director of Housing, Finance, and Accounts, Dr. Matthias Byuan, was intended to take place in Makurdi.
However, the State Police Command, through a letter signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Samuel Gimba on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, directed Mr. Agada to call off the meetings.
This directive cited an earlier communication received from Governor Hyacinth Alia, imposing a moratorium on all forms of political gatherings and meetings in the state.
Governor Alia, through his Chief of Staff, Paul Biam, issued a letter on February 27, 2024, outlining the ban on political gatherings due to the precarious security situation prevailing in the state.
“I write to inform you that His Excellency Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alla has banned all political gatherings in any form, be it inter or intra party or groups in Benue State till further notice. This has become necessary following Intelligence on the volatility of the security atmosphere in the state,” the letter stated.
