A group of young people in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State seized control of the council headquarters on Monday.
This action followed the expiration of the tenure of the local government chairmen in the State.
Despite the end of their official term, the chairmen, represented by the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), pledged to stay in office. They cited a Local Government Amendment Law enacted by the Martin Amaewhule-led 27 House of Assembly members, which extends their tenure by six months.
Rivers ALGON Chairman, Allwell Ihunda, who also serves as the Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, asserted that the House of Assembly’s law grants them the authority to remain in their positions.
