The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has finalized arrangements to construct its aircraft hangar at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria. Previously, the RCCG utilized the Dominion Aviation Center, which houses the hangar of Living Faith Church, also known as Winners Chapel International, for parking its aircraft. However, recent approvals have paved the way for the RCCG to build its dedicated hangar.
Aircraft hangars are essential for organizations with private jets, ensuring the long-term safety and cost-effective maintenance of the aircraft. Leaving aircraft parked at open bays can pose challenges, making dedicated hangars a preferred option. The move towards private hangars gained momentum in 2010, addressing the financial burden faced by churches and other organizations with aircraft.
In 2023, a former Minister of Aviation had threatened to demolish the Dominion Hangar within two weeks. Presently, there appears to be a reconsideration by the government, with concerns about the associated costs, potential litigation, and compensation arising from such demolition. The Dominion Hangar, illustrated in the accompanying picture, remains standing amid ongoing discussions.
Several other private hangars at the airport express relief at not facing the demolition threat alone, particularly noting the involvement of a church in this specific instance. The situation reflects an evolving landscape at the airport concerning private hangars and potential government actions.
