BREAKING: Sacked PDP lawmakers storm Plateau Assembly, police teargas them
Members of the Plateau State House of Assembly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who were ousted by the Court of Appeal, have now arrived at the Assembly Complex, pressing to be allowed entry into Tuesday’s session.
Recall that the Court of Appeal removed the 16 members because the PDP in Plateau State lacked the organizational structure to endorse candidates in the previous general elections. Despite their removal, these lawmakers had vowed to attend the Assembly’s Tuesday session alongside their counterparts.
Under the leadership of Ishaku Maren, the dismissed lawmakers argue that the Supreme Court’s decision, which affirmed Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s election, also qualified them to retain their positions in the Assembly.
These lawmakers declare their intent to resume their legislative duties on Tuesday, when the House is set to reconvene after a two-month recess. However, during the session, eight members of the Assembly conducted proceedings.
Following the session, the Speaker addressed the ousted lawmakers, urging them to maintain the current situation until all legal avenues are explored.
As a precautionary measure, security personnel have sealed off the Assembly Complex to prevent any potential breakdown of law and order.
