The Nigerian Senate has appointed the Minority Leader, Senator Patrick Moro as the new Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tax-Reform Reconciliation.

The appointment, announced earlier today, is part of the Senate’s efforts to strengthen the nation’s tax systems and improve its fiscal policies.

The announcement was made by Deputy Senate President, Barau I. Jibrin (APC, Kano North), during a plenary session on Wednesday.

Presiding over the session, Barau acknowledged the controversies surrounding the bills and revealed that the committee’s mandate includes consultations with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), the executive, and other critical stakeholders.

On October 3, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu submitted four tax reform bills to the National Assembly, as outlined in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House of Representatives Speaker, Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas, during separate sessions.

The President stated that the bills are designed to strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal institutions and support his administration’s broader developmental agenda for the country.

However, the bills have faced significant opposition from several groups, including governors, traditional leaders, civil society organizations, and some federal lawmakers.

Barau also named Senators Titus Zam (APC, Benue North West), Orjir Uzor Kalu (Abia North), Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), and Abdullahi Yahaya (Kebbi North), among others, as members of the newly formed committee.
