BREAKING: Senate reduces INEC election notice timeline from 360 to 180 days
The Senate has shortened the period given to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue a notice of election, cutting it from 360 days to 180 days.
The decision followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Tahir Monguno, who proposed reducing the earlier timeline that required INEC to publish the notice of election 360 days before polls.
Monguno said the adjustment was necessary to help INEC comply with statutory requirements, noting that maintaining the 360-day window would be unrealistic, especially with preparations already underway for the next general election.
With the amendment, INEC now has additional time to issue the notice of election ahead of the 2027 polls.
