Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has pleaded not guilty to the cybercrime charges brought against him by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Sowore appeared before Justice Liman on Wednesday, where the charges were read to him.
The charges stemmed from his social media post in which he referred to Egbetokun as an “Illegal IGP.” Sowore entered the dock around 10:00 AM and maintained his innocence, responding with “not guilty” to each count.
Before proceedings began, the police charges were found to contain several grammatical and spelling errors.
Despite the confusion over the paperwork, Sowore remained firm in his plea of not guilty.
Meanwhile, a group of activists and civil society organizations gathered outside the court in protest of Sowore’s arrest and the charges levied against him.
