The Supreme Court has rejected the application put forth by Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to introduce new evidence in his appeal against President Bola Tinubu. The court cited a lack of jurisdiction in its decision.
The highest judicial authority in the land took a firm stance, characterizing Atiku’s petition as a “friendly joke” and deemed it ineligible for consideration. According to the Supreme Court, the case had been filed after the stipulated timeframe and failed to substantiate allegations of forgery.
This matter arose when Atiku sought permission from the Supreme Court to present fresh evidence implicating Tinubu in a forgery scandal. He implored the court to examine the case, highlighting its significant constitutional and democratic ramifications.
Atiku’s requested evidence comprised the academic records of President Tinubu, which he claimed had been provided by Chicago State University (CSU) on October 2. Atiku argued that this new evidence was pivotal to his appeal and insisted that the Supreme Court had the inherent jurisdiction to entertain and adjudicate on his application.
However, the Supreme Court countered that it lacked jurisdiction to admit this fresh evidence, as it had exceeded the time limit outlined in the constitution.
At the time of this report, the judgment was still pending, and the legal proceedings continued.
