President Bola Tinubu has removed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, from office, appointing Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu as his replacement.

Sources said Egbetokun’s exit followed a directive from the President asking him to resign during a meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday.

Tinubu had earlier appointed Egbetokun as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023. His substantive appointment was later ratified by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.

Egbetokun, who was appointed at the age of 58, was originally due for retirement on September 4, 2024, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, his tenure was controversially extended by the President, a move that attracted public debate at the time.

Further details surrounding his removal were still emerging as of press time.
