President Bola Tinubu is gearing up to execute a cabinet reshuffle, expressing dissatisfaction with some appointees who are reportedly “struggling in their portfolios and unprepared for the job.”
The impending shake-up comes months after the President’s warning to cabinet members about underperformance during a three-day Cabinet Retreat in November at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, The Will reports.
During the retreat, President Tinubu declared, “You will sign a bond with me. If you are performing, nothing to fear. If you miss the objective, if you don’t perform, you leave us.”
The President has outlined his priority areas, directing his Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, to reactivate the “Presidential Delivery Tracker” for monitoring and reporting the performances of cabinet members.
Amidst the reshuffle talks, there are indications that President Tinubu may leverage the ongoing corruption scandal involving two ministers, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Minister Dr. Betta Edu, to drive the anticipated changes.
President Tinubu recently suspended Edu from office in connection to the scandal, while Tunji-Ojo faces scrutiny over alleged involvement with a firm, New Planet Projects Ltd, which received N438 million as “consultancy fees” related to the National Social Register contract—a part of the contentious N3 billion contracts awarded by Edu.
Although the specific ministers facing removal remain unconfirmed, sources suggest that up to five ministers could be dropped from the cabinet. Additionally, there is an expectation of a new appointment for the Ministry of Labour and Employment, following the resignation of Simon Bako Lalong, the former Plateau State Governor, who stepped down to assume the role of Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
