TUC joins nationwide protest
In response to the recent removal of fuel subsidy by the government, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has taken a stance to join the protest against the decision. The TUC, a prominent workers’ union in Nigeria, has directed all its state councils to actively participate in the nationwide protest organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The decision comes in the wake of widespread discontent and concerns over the removal of the fuel subsidy, which has resulted in a sharp increase in fuel prices across the country. The TUC, aligning with the NLC’s stance, views the subsidy removal as detrimental to the welfare of the Nigerian citizens, particularly the working class.
As the protest gains momentum, various political figures and entities have also been vocal in expressing their views. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has faced criticism from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over its handling of the oil and gas challenges, including the subsidy removal.
In light of these developments, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has been closely monitoring the situation. Furthermore, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Ayuba Wabba, has reassured the public that the protest will proceed as planned, despite rumors of its suspension.
The recent helicopter crash on Oba Akran Road, Lagos, has added to the tensions, highlighting the need for safety measures during public protests. The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a warning against any potential violence during the scheduled protest, urging the protesters to conduct themselves peacefully.
As the situation unfolds, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) remain steadfast in their commitment to voicing the concerns of the Nigerian people regarding the fuel subsidy removal. The nationwide protest is expected to send a strong message to the government, calling for a reconsideration of the subsidy removal and seeking solutions to the country’s oil and gas challenges.
