The recent hike in tuition fees in tertiary institutions and government schools has sparked outrage among students, with the National Association of University Students (NAUS) threatening to embark on a mass protest against the increment. In an exclusive statement titled “Warning Against Tuition Fee Increment,” NAUS Chairman Eruobami Ayobami and National Deputy President Babalola Daniel expressed their displeasure at the act of the Federal Government and higher institutions that have decided to increase tuition fees amidst the current economic challenges.
The University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State, has reportedly increased fees for undergraduate students, leading to further frustration among students. The previous tuition fee of N19,000 has been raised to N190,250 for students studying medicine, while courses requiring laboratory and studio work will now cost N140,250. Similarly, the Federal Ministry of Education has increased the school fees of new students into Federal Government Colleges, also known as Federal Unity Colleges, to ₦100,000, up from the previous N45,000.
NAUS voiced its concern over the state of university education in the country, stating that measures that negatively affect the educational system should not be implemented. The association emphasized the importance of investing in higher education, as universities are where professionals who will drive the nation’s development are trained and mentored.
This was exclusively disclosed to our correspondent in a statement titled “Warning Against Tuition Fee Increment”, on Saturday, signed by the NAUS Chairman and National Deputy President, Eruobami Ayobami and Babalola Daniel, respectively.
“It is with great displeasure as we Write to condemn the act of the Federal Government as well as higher institutions who have decided to increase the price of tuition in this current economic disintegration,” part of the statement read.
The students’ body warned that any enactment of tuition increment will be met with strong opposition, and they are prepared to stage a mass protest to protect the interests of the students’ community. NAUS called on higher institutions that have planned tuition fee hikes to reconsider their actions, as it would have adverse effects on the academic system and burden the students.
