A group of yet to be unidentified gunmen have attacked a Nigerian Army checkpoint at Obeagu-Amodu along Amechi-Agbani road in Enugu South local government area of Enugu State.
It was gathered that the gunmen stormed the area in two Lexus Jeeps and one Toyota Sienna bus around 7:25am.
They reportedly opened fire at the combined team of the Nigerian police and the military. Although, the number of casualties was still sketchy, sources said that all the soldiers and policemen at the checkpoint were killed.
Some unconfirmed reports also said that three soldiers and two policemen were killed in the attack while three soldiers escaped with various degrees of injuries.
Motorists and residents nearby were reported to have scampered for safety as there was heavy shooting between the hoodlums and security operatives.
Motorists plying the road told Newsmen that soldiers and policemen who were deployed to the scene were subjecting young men plying the road to “serious human rights abuses” in the wake of the attacks.
“Passengers in tricycles going to Agbani from Amechi were roughly manhandled by soldiers.
They are going to villages searching for young men and packing them to their barracks in chains,” said the motorists who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Several policemen and civilians have been killed in past attacks at the same checkpoint.
Efforts to get police reaction were unsuccessful as the Enugu Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, did not pick his calls.
