The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified the reason behind the arrest of Martins Innocent Otse, stating that it was in line with its mandate to tackle economic and financial crimes. Otse was invited by the Commission following a series of petitions alleging financial malfeasance against him.

However, despite multiple invitations sent through his known addresses and communication channels, he failed to respond.

The EFCC emphasized that the petitions raised against Otse pertain to grave allegations of financial crimes, which the Commission could not overlook. While acknowledging that Otse had previously made unguarded attacks on its operations, the EFCC clarified that his arrest was not motivated by these comments. The law enforcement agency assured that any such attacks would be investigated separately by the relevant authorities.

The Commission stated that it has the legal right to hold Otse in custody, as is the case with any suspect under investigation. A Remand Order has been obtained, and Otse has been offered administrative bail, with his release contingent on fulfilling all necessary conditions.

In its statement, the EFCC expressed appreciation for the public’s interest in its operations but urged against any insinuations regarding its motives. The Commission stressed that it should be allowed to carry out its duties without fear or favor.

The EFCC confirmed that once investigations are concluded, formal charges will be filed.
