BREAKING: Wike orders arrest of owner of Abuja collapsed building
Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, has issued a directive for the immediate identification and apprehension of the owner of a two-storey building that collapsed in Abuja on Wednesday night.
The building, located at Lagos Crescent, Garki Village in the Garki District of the capital, housed at least 39 residents. The tragic incident resulted in two confirmed deaths, while 37 individuals were rescued and transported to various hospitals.
The collapse occured around 11 pm during heavy rainfall, and initial rescue efforts were hindered by the lack of access to an excavator, necessitating manual rescue operations.
Speaking at the scene of the incident, Wike expressed his concern over the calamity. He highlighted that the original residents of the area had been designated for resettlement, yet the FCT Administration had not carried out such a resettlement plan for years.
Commending the efforts of the rescue agencies, Wike conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims and lauded the swift response of agencies like NEMA and FEMA. He also urged the Permanent Secretary to ensure the expeditious raising of funds to cover the hospital bills of those rescued.
Wike emphasized the importance of adhering to building standards and codes to prevent such disasters. He underscored the need for proper planning in cities to avoid occurrences like building collapses. He expressed his intention to address the issue of illegal developments and non-compliant buildings to ensure safety for all residents.
Wike further urged for the immediate resettlement of the affected residents and called for a comprehensive plan to address the area’s development. He stressed the significance of building approvals and compliance with regulations to safeguard lives and property.
Wike demanded the identification and arrest of the building’s owner, underscoring the importance of accountability and adherence to legal requirements in construction and property development.
