Two brothers have been arrested for abducting and raping a 14-year-old girl in the Erima community of Emuoha Local Government Area, Rivers State.
The incident occurred last Saturday as the girl was walking along a secluded path to her uncle’s house. The suspects, identified as ‘Honest’ and his sibling, Okwukwe, ambushed her.
According to a local source who wished to remain anonymous, the girl’s mother grew concerned when her daughter did not return home and went to check at her brother’s house, only to find she was missing. The mother raised an alarm, which led to the involvement of local vigilantes.
The vigilante group, ONELGA Security Planning and Advisory Committee, led by Onuigba Chinonye, began searching for the girl. Chinonye reported that the group found the brothers in a secluded area near a bush, where they were sexually assaulting the girl.
Chinonye explained, “While on patrol with my team, we encountered a distraught woman whose 14-year-old daughter had been missing since Saturday. We started investigating based on her information and, with the help of neighbors, located the girl.”
During the attempted arrest, the elder brother resisted, leading to a struggle, while the younger brother managed to escape. The elder suspect was apprehended and handed over to the Egi Police Division in Obite, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA.
Chinonye urged the youth in the community to avoid criminal activities and focus on productive endeavors.
Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the incident, stating that the arrested suspect is in custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department. She added that the Commissioner of Police has directed the Divisional Police Officer to locate and arrest the fleeing suspect to face justice.
