Bruno Fernandes named Manchester United new captain
Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, has named Bruno Fernandes as the club’s new captain. The Portuguese midfielder will take over the armband from Harry Maguire, who has been relieved of his captaincy role after slipping down the pecking order at Old Trafford.
The announcement was made through an official club statement, which highlighted Fernandes’ previous experience in leading the team on several occasions. Now, Ten Hag has confirmed that Fernandes will permanently assume the captaincy, entrusting him with the responsibility to guide the team.
Since joining Manchester United from Sporting in January 2020, Fernandes has been a mainstay in the squad, making an impressive 185 appearances for the Red Devils. His on-field contributions and leadership qualities have made him a natural choice for the captaincy role.
Fernandes’ reign as captain is set to commence when Manchester United kicks off their 2023-24 Premier League season against Wolves on August 14. With new signings such as Mason Mount from Chelsea and the potential addition of Inter Milan’s goalkeeper Andre Onana, the team is gearing up for an exciting season ahead.
Currently on tour in the US, Manchester United will face various competitive challenges, including a clash against Arsenal in New Jersey. As they continue their preparations with matches against Wrexham, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Lens, and Athletic Bilbao, the Red Devils are eager to make their mark in the upcoming Premier League campaign.
