German Bundesliga clubside Bochum have sacked coach Thomas Reis after starting the season with six straight defeats.
The club said on Monday that Reis had to go after Saturday’s 1-3 loss at newly-promoted Schalke 04.
The club’s under-19 team coach Heiko Butscher, a former Bochum player, will take over the first team on an interim basis.
“We urgently have to find solutions to improve the very difficult sporting situation and at the same time fade out topics that have a negative influence on it,” said Bochum sports chief Patrick Fabian.
He added that work was being done to secure a permanent successor to Reis.
Bochum impressed last season after promotion back to the top-flight, but Reis failed in summer to agree an extension to his contract which expired in 2023.
He reportedly considered moving to Schalke 04, though he denied this ahead of the weekend defeat to the Gelsenkirchen side.
“That this decision did not come easily should be clear to everyone,” said Fabian. “Thomas Reis has a connection to the club and city that extends beyond the success of the last three years.”
Reis had worked as a coach at various levels for Bochum before taking the top job in 2019 to stabilise the team and win promotion in 2021.
Last term they had wins over champions Bayern Munich and local rivals Borussia Dortmund.
But Reis warned the second season back would be tough as Bochum invested the least of all 18 Bundesliga clubs.
Bochum host Cologne on Sunday in Butscher’s first game in charge.
