Veteran figure in Nollywood, Patrick Doyle, has expressed his belief that the acclaim garnered by singer Burna Boy is not rightfully earned. In a Facebook post shared on Wednesday, Doyle criticized the Grammy-winning artist, asserting that Burna Boy has not achieved any significant feats solely by his own merit.
Doyle went on to underline the role of legendary figures such as Sunny Ade, Fela Anikulapo, and I.K Dairo, who laid the groundwork for artists like Burna Boy. He emphasized the importance of showing reverence to these pioneers and being mindful of their substantial contributions.
In his post, he stated, “Burna Boy has not by himself done anything that can be remotely described as great. He and his peers are recipients of the labours of heroes past. They need to be humble and respectful of their diligent and truly pioneering predecessors.”
Doyle stressed the significance of recognizing the historical context in which contemporary artists thrive, acknowledging the monumental efforts of trailblazers spanning decades from the 1960s to the 2000s. He warned against contributing to the rise of an “arrogant and obnoxious monster” by not valuing the legacy left by those who paved the way for the current generation.
