CAF set $650,000 prize money for Women’s Champions League final

The winners of the 2022 African Women’s Champions League will receive $400,000 in prize money, Confederation of African Football President Patrice Motsepe has announced.

Last year, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa won the maiden edition of the African Women’s Champions League.

They however did not get any prize money from CAF as a reward, a situation that the governing body has addressed with the promise of a $400,000 bonus for the winners of this year’s tournament.

The runners-up will receive $250,000.

CAF had been accused of neglecting the women’s game, but on the eve of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco, Motsepe repeated the need for the game to invest in the women’s game.

His native South Africa went on to win the continental championship, defeating hosts Morocco 2-1 in the final in Rabat.

Banyana Banyana will pocket $50,0000 in prize money from CAF following their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations victory.

The South African Football Association has also promised that each player will be rewarded with 400,000 Rands ($23,250) for the victory.

Later this year, Morocco will also host the Women’s Champions League, which is played in an eight-team tournament format, following zonal qualifiers across the continent.
