The Confederation of African Football has instituted an investigation over alleged misconduct by Cameroon Football Association president Samuel Eto’o.
CAF has not mentioned the specific case they are investigating, but it comes two months after he was accused of match-fixing.
“CAF has received written statements from several Cameroonian football stakeholders to look into and investigate certain alleged improper conduct by Mr. Samuel Eto’o, who is President of the Fédération Camerounaise de Football,” the statement from CAF reads.
The former Indomitable Lions captain was elected president of Cameroon’s Football Association in 2021.
Whilst the allegations are prima facie serious, Eto’o is presumed to be innocent until an appropriate judicial body concludes otherwise.
Eto’o’s rise to the top of Cameroonian football has not been short of controversies but the latest developments could land him in trouble.
According to French publication, L’Equipe, Eto’o is accused of being involved in match-fixing.
The reports say that the former Barcelona striker promised to promote a second-division club Victoria United to the top flight.
A recording reportedly of Eto’o’s voice sounded like promising Victoria’s president Valentine Gwain, that the football boss would help the team earn a promotion by manipulating matches through referees.
CAF, as quoted by Daily Mail, further stated: “CAF will make no further announcement while the investigations are ongoing and will only make public statements when the proceedings have come to an end.”
The club (Victoria) had won only two games in their opening seven.
According to online statistics, the team went on to win 12 and lost only two in 15 outings, including three awarded through the boardroom.
During his playing days, Eto’o featured for the biggest European clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea, scoring over 293 goals in over 500 appearances.
He played 118 games for Cameroon, scoring 56 goals from 1997 to 2014, winning the Africa Cup of Nations twice in 2000 and 2002 on top of an Olympic Gold medal in 2000.
