Fulham Football Club has officially signed Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey from Ajax, securing the 23-year-old on a four-year contract for an undisclosed transfer fee.
The London-based club confirmed the signing of Bassey in a statement on their official website. The completion of the deal is awaiting international clearance, which Fulham expects to receive early next week. The contract also includes an option for the club to extend the deal for an additional year.
“We are delighted to announce the acquisition of Calvin Bassey from Ajax for an undisclosed fee, pending international clearance, which is anticipated to be granted in the early part of next week. The 23-year-old defender has agreed to a contract until the summer of 2027, with a Club option to extend for a further 12 months,” the statement read.
Bassey, who will be wearing the number three shirt this season, expressed his excitement about joining Fulham, emphasizing the club’s stature and its presence in the prestigious Premier League.
“I know how big a club Fulham is. They always have quality players, and they’re playing in the Premier League—the best league in the world—so I didn’t have to think much about it. It’s a London club as well, so it’s always a plus to go home! I’m happy it’s all done now, and I can just focus on the football and help the team build on last season when they did amazing,” said Bassey in an interview with FFCtv.
Born in Italy but raised in London, Bassey began his football journey at a young age with Leicester City’s academy. He later made a successful move to Rangers in the summer of 2020, where his career thrived, with the club securing the Scottish Premiership with an impressive 25-point lead and a record-breaking 26 clean sheets.
After a highly successful spell at Rangers, Ajax came calling and signed him for a club-record fee of €23 million. During his time at Ajax, Bassey made 39 appearances in various competitions, including his debut in the prestigious Champions League, where he scored once and provided five assists.
A Nigerian international, Bassey earned his first cap for the Super Eagles in a World Cup Qualifier last year and has since represented Nigeria ten times.
