Odoh Ugwu, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment, and Climate in Benue State, has issued a stern warning to residents residing along the banks of the River Benue. The commissioner has urged them to swiftly relocate to safer areas in light of Cameroon’s impending plans to open the Lagdo dam.
Commissioner Ugwu delivered this urgent advisory during his official visit to the Greater Makurdi Water Works, situated along the River Benue, shortly after assuming his responsibilities as commissioner.
He emphasized the gravity of the situation, citing alerts from relevant authorities concerning the imminent threat of flooding. In response, he stressed the paramount importance of residents living within the river’s proximity to evacuate promptly, thereby safeguarding themselves from the impending disaster.
Furthermore, Commissioner Ugwu revealed that the Ministry of Water Resources, Environment, and Climate is actively devising strategies to mitigate the potential impact of the impending flood. Their measures include clearing blocked drainage channels to ensure unobstructed water flow. This, he explained, will play a vital role in minimizing the impending disaster’s effects.
In addition to flood preparedness, Ugwu affirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to enhancing sanitation within the state, underlining the imperative of improving overall living conditions for residents
