A faculty member at the University of North Carolina lost their life in a shooting incident that occurred on the Chapel Hill campus on Monday. Authorities have confirmed that a suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the tragic event.
The shooting took place at around 1 p.m. at Caudill Labs, located near the heart of the campus. UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz addressed the media in a press briefing, revealing that the shooting resulted in the fatality of the male faculty member. No other individuals were harmed during the incident.
The identity of the deceased faculty member is being withheld until his relatives can be informed.
Guskiewicz expressed the profound impact of the loss and the toll the shooting has taken on the campus community’s sense of trust and safety. He stated, “His loss is devastating and the shooting damages the trust and safety that we so often take for granted in our campus community. We will work to rebuild that sense of trust and safety within our community, and our hearts are with the family of our fellow faculty member, those who are personally connected to the victim and those traumatized by this senseless act of violence.”
In response to the shooting, the campus was put on lockdown for three hours, with a campuswide emergency alert issued. Ultimately, classes for Monday and Tuesday were canceled as a result of the incident.
UNC Police Chief Brian James reported that law enforcement responded to the labs after receiving reports of gunshots. They discovered the deceased faculty member upon arrival. A suspect was apprehended approximately 90 minutes after the shooting, based on provided descriptions. The weapon used in the shooting has not yet been recovered.
The investigation is ongoing, and University officials refrained from providing further details due to the ongoing nature of the case. The motive behind the shooting remains undetermined at this time.
The FBI is assisting in the investigation, and Caudill Labs will remain closed as it is treated as a crime scene.
