Toronto police have arrested Amaka Sunnberger, a Nigerian woman living in Canada, for threatening to kill Nigerians of Yoruba and Benin descent in a viral video.
In a statement, police confirmed that Sunnberger was arrested on Sunday, September 1, and is set to face charges in court on Monday.
The statement details, “She has been charged with making threats and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice, 2201 Finch Avenue West, on Monday, September 2, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. in courtroom 107.”
“The investigation is being treated as a suspected hate-motivated offence.”
The incident has sparked significant backlash, leading the Nigerian House of Representatives to demand her prosecution.
The Nigerian lawmakers had written to the Canadian government to prosecute Sunnberger for inciting violence and genocide against the Yoruba and Benin people.
Additionally, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has submitted a petition to Honourable Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton, Canada, urging action in the case.
