Canada to accelerate processing of visitor visas as part of immigration system overhaul

As part of its visionary immigration report, “An Immigration System for Canada’s Future,” Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has unveiled plans to streamline the processing of specific visitor visas. This strategic initiative aims to prioritize individuals attending major conferences and events in Canada, marking a pivotal step in enhancing the country’s immigration system.

The comprehensive action plan, presented by the immigration department, underscores the commitment to efficient visa processing for global attendees registered with IRCC-recognized events. The plan, developed in consultation with Canadian stakeholders, aligns with Canada’s ongoing efforts to adapt its immigration system to meet evolving economic and demographic needs.

IRCC’s multifaceted goals include reducing wait times and enhancing service standards for newcomers to Canada. Within the broader objective of creating a more welcoming experience, the focus on expediting certain visitor visas, particularly for tourism and major events, stands out as a key aspect of the government’s proactive approach.

Noteworthy Steps in Canada’s Visitor Visa Enhancement:

  1. Expansion of “Partial Visa Exempt Countries” List: In June of the current year, IRCC expanded the list of “partial visa exempt countries” by adding 13 more nations. This brought the total to 67 countries where travelers can apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA) instead of a traditional visitor visa. The advantage lies in the expedited approval process for eTA applications, often within minutes.

  2. Visitor Visa Surge: Contrary to the predominant focus on permanent residence, IRCC emphasizes the significance of temporary residents, including visitor visa applicants. By the end of 2022, Canada witnessed a substantial increase in visitor visa applications, with IRCC actively addressing backlogs and aiming for quicker processing. Notably, in November 2022 alone, IRCC processed over 260,000 visitor visas, surpassing the monthly average of 180,000 applications in 2019.

In light of these developments, Canada’s commitment to prioritizing visitor visas through this innovative strategy is poised to benefit numerous eligible newcomers seeking to visit the country. This dynamic approach aligns with the broader vision of fostering a more efficient, inclusive, and responsive immigration system for Canada’s future.
