Carlee Russell: Alabama woman admits to faking kidnapping, apologizes for hoax

Hoover, AL – Carlee Russell, the 25-year-old nursing student from Alabama, has admitted to fabricating a kidnapping hoax that triggered a nationwide search effort to find her. The revelation came during a news conference where Hoover Police Chief Nicholas C. Derzis read a statement provided by Russell’s attorney.

Contrary to initial reports, Russell confessed that she had not seen a toddler wandering on the side of the highway, and she had not been abducted as claimed when she disappeared on July 13. Instead, she revealed that she had not left the Hoover area during the time in question.

The police department, together with the district attorney’s office, is currently considering potential criminal charges against Russell for her actions.

In the statement read by her attorney, Russell apologized to the community, the volunteers who participated in the search, and the Hoover Police Department for her deception.

During the 49 hours of her alleged disappearance, social media was filled with posts expressing concern and seeking information about Russell’s whereabouts. However, authorities were unable to verify her initial statements upon her return.

The police had planned to interview Russell on Monday, but her attorney provided the statement instead. The department intends to reschedule the interview to gather more information about the incident.

Chief Derzis emphasized that Russell acted alone and did not have any assistance during the perpetration of the hoax. However, the police are still investigating to determine where she was during the time she claimed to be missing.

Russell’s case garnered significant media attention and sparked discussions about missing Black women and girls. Despite the revelation of the hoax, advocates maintain that the issue remains a serious concern and deserves attention.

Russell’s ex-boyfriend, Thomar Latrell Simmons, expressed his surprise and genuine concern in a Facebook post, thanking the volunteers and supporters who rallied to find her.

As authorities continue their investigation, further updates will be provided on any developments in the case.
