Catholic Bishops in Nigeria move against Pope, reject blessing of same-sex couples

Catholic Bishops in Nigeria have expressed their disagreement with Pope Francis’s recent stance on blessing same-sex couples, suggesting that it may inadvertently endorse same-sex marriage.

Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji conveyed this sentiment during the formal opening of the 2024 First Plenary Assembly of the CBCN at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria in Abuja.

Ugorji stressed the expectation that statements from the Holy See should foster unity and communion on matters of doctrine, morals, and liturgy.

However, he criticized the recent declaration, Fiducia Supplicans, for causing division within the Church instead.

The document’s prohibition of liturgical blessings for same-sex couples, coupled with its recommendation for spontaneous pastoral blessings for couples in irregular situations, including same-sex couples, was deemed ambiguous. This ambiguity led to varied reactions from Episcopal Conferences and individual Bishops worldwide.

The publication of the document triggered shock, outrage, and disbelief among faithful Catholics in Nigeria, Africa, and beyond. Many questioned the feasibility of priests blessing same-sex couples in sinful unions without causing confusion and scandal.

In light of the confusion and resistance, Ugorji urged pastors to uphold the Church’s teachings rooted in Holy Scripture and Tradition. He stressed the Church’s position against blessing same-sex couples or unions in Africa, citing the grave depravity and contrariness to natural law of homosexual acts.

Nonetheless, he emphasized the unconditional love of God for sinners and the call to repentance, highlighting the pastoral and prophetic duty to guide individuals towards living in accordance with God’s will.
