Catholic Priest collapses, dies while playing Tennis in Anambra
The Catholic Diocese of Awka in Anambra State has announced the passing of Reverend Father Anthony Udogu. According to a brief press release issued on Tuesday by Charles Ndubisi, the Diocesan Chancellor of the Catholic Secretariat, Awka, Father Udogu died in the early hours of Monday, May 19, 2025, while playing lawn tennis.
The Diocese expressed condolences to his family, parishioners, and all who mourn his loss.
Born on December 24, 1964, and ordained on August 19, 1995, Father Udogu served as the Parish Priest of St. Francis Parish, Awka, and Dean of Awka Il Deanery until his sudden death.
The statement read, “With faith in the resurrection of the dead, the Catholic Diocese of Awka announces the sudden passing of our brother priest, Rev. Fr. Anthony Nnaemeka Udogu, who collapsed while playing lawn tennis earlier today, Monday, May 19.
“He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but all efforts to save him were unsuccessful. Until his death, he was the Parish Priest of St. Francis Parish, Awka, and Dean of Awka Il Deanery.
“Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course. May the soul of Rev. Fr. Anthony Nnaemeka Udogu rest peacefully in the bosom of the Lord. Amen.”
